FIVE STARS TO THE 2016 GRAPE HARVEST

Montalcino, 18 February 2017 – The positive spiral of Brunello continues. Just like the 2015 grape harvest, the 2016 grape harvest was also assigned 5 stars, although it truly put the producers to the test due to a very irregular season in terms of the weather.

We are satisfied with the result achieved and undoubtedly owe it to our producers’ know-how – comments the Chairman of the Consortium, Patrizio Cencioni. After a rainy spring, autumn was characterised by hot days and cool nights. These temperature changes made the grapes particularly rich in acidity, colour and fragrance. We expect great things from this vintage”.

The comments made by the oenologists called to evaluate the 2016 grape harvest confirmed the opinion of the Consortium’s Chairman.

One of these experts is Paolo Vagaggini, oenologist of national renown and one of the leading global experts of Sangiovese, who had this to say: “The vintage developed clear, net and fragrant scents, a strong acidic structure which guarantees long ageing, and an intense and bright colour. These characteristics are clear despite the fact that the season did not get off to a good start. Fortunately, Sangiovese is a grape variety that reacts very well to seasonal changes, and so it was able to turn to its advantage factors that weren’t so positive. We expect stylistically modern wines”.

According to Carlo Ferrini, “The 2016 grape harvest was perfect, one of the best ones in recent years. During the months of May and June, the weather was cool, with a good level of rainfall, while the summer was balanced and not too hot. I think that this grape harvest comes very close to the outstanding results achieved in 2010 and in 2015”.
