The estate was founded in 1972 and released its first vintage in 1977. In 2003 it was taken over by Roberto Giannelli, who came to wine from another profession and chose to devote himself entirely to this land. Since then the estate has been patiently reshaped: the vineyards are now planted exclusively to Sangiovese, yields have been reduced, the cellar has been renovated and farming has been converted to organic, certified since 2013.
The vineyards are divided into four plots, each with its own character: Comunali, Lo Scorno, Le Coste and Le Lucére. Le Lucére, planted in 1996, is an east-facing amphitheatre of about 3.5 hectares, surrounded by woodland. It gives both the Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucére and the Le Lucére Riserva. The vineyard beside the estate produces the Brunello di Montalcino San Filippo dei Comunali, while the Rosso di Montalcino Lo Scorno is grown on clay and limestone soils rich in schist and fossil fragments.
In the cellar, Sangiovese ages for 28 to 30 months in oak casks of different sizes, from 5 to 30 hectolitres, then rests in bottle for about 12 months before release. Production is around 40,000 bottles a year. The scale is deliberately small, so that every vineyard and every vintage can be followed closely.
