VINITALY, BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO CONSORTIUM: THE NEW GEO-VITICULTURAL MPA OF MONTALCINO PRESENTED

08/04/2025

(Verona, April 8th 2025). An official tool to objectively describe the unique and identifying characteristics of the territory. The new geo-viticultural map of Montalcino was presented today at Vinitaly, created by the Consorzio del vino Brunello di Montalcino in collaboration with the leading high-tech farming company Copernico and the Masters of Wine Gabriele Gorelli and Andrea Lonardi. An intellectual property of the consortium, the map represents one of the most complex systems of analysis and characterization of a territory that takes into account not only the geological component of the soil, but also the climate, average temperatures, rainfall and winds, as well as exposure and altimetry.

“The creation of the geo-viticultural map was born from the need to have a tool that clearly identifies and describes our territory through a choral and stratified approach that highlights all the morphological aspects of the vineyards in Montalcino,” states the president of the Consortium Fabrizio Bindocci. “The reliability is guaranteed by the fact that the map was developed on the specific needs of Montalcino by a group of professionals who live, work and know our village deeply. A methodological approach that is also supported by our wineries, which actively contribute to enriching and updating the network of knowledge and defining the peculiarities of the territory in an increasingly detailed way.”

For MW Gabriele Gorelli and Andrea Lonardi: “Today’s session presents the first stage of what will be a developing journey in the reading of a unique territory like Montalcino. The geo-viticultural map, with its declinations, its implementations, confirms the strong distinctiveness of Brunello. The complementarity with the ‘Brunello Forma’ project enriches the description of static elements and the dynamism of the vintages, enhancing the narrative of the protagonists: the producers”.

"Knowing to be able to understand the complex environmental mosaic that characterizes our territory, that determines the environmental uniqueness that defines the Brunello imprint. This has been the lever that for over ten years has motivated Copernico Srl to participate and lead research and innovation projects in the digital farming wine sector, gaining experience and skills that we have put at the service of the Consorzio Brunello di Montalcino in a profitable synergy with the wine production and with those, like Netsens who produces intelligent technology for environmental monitoring" comment for the company Copernico, Marco Antoni CEO & Founder and geol. Emilio Machetti.

The map, thanks to the stratification of analyses and the weighted average values, defines a reference standard useful for each production reality that can be placed in its own specific context, offering a more accurate detail on the territorial positioning of the company itself and the consequent oenological interpretation, as well as obtaining useful tools to understand the weighted behavior of each vintage. With the contribution of the companies that provide the weather and climate data and the punctual soil tests, the map is now one of the most complete models of sensory analysis available in the oenological panorama, ready to establish itself as an international benchmark.

The presentation was followed by a tasting of six labels of Brunello di Montalcino 2020 commented according to Brunello Forma, the new vintage evaluation method presented for the first time last November at Benvenuto Brunello. The system created combines objective data related to the climatic trends of the different vintages, the consequences that the seasons have on the vegetative-productive behavior of the Sangiovese variety and the subjective sensations of a representative tasting panel to perceive and enhance the peculiarities of the different vintages.
